6 August – “Free festival” to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the inscription of Wallonia's major mining site, the Bois du Cazier, on the World Heritage List.

As a prelude to the 61st anniversary commemorations of the 8 August 1956 tragedy, and to mark the fifth anniversary of the inscription of Wallonia's major mining sites on UNESCO's World Heritage List, the Bois du Cazier is organising a series of events on 6 August 2017, in partnership with the non-profit organisation 'Arts et Publics', highlighting every facet of the site, focusing on both the museums and the wooded area.

Two themed visits
10:30: 'Art social et Mémoire' by Alain Forti, Curator
15:00: 'Le Bois du Cazier. Patrimoine mondial' by Jean-Louis Delaet, Director
Thanks to two visits that focus on works of art and remarkable objects on the one hand, and the significance of its exceptional universal value on the other, you will be able to discover the site in a completely new light.

Walks on the slag heaps
10:30 and 15:00: Discover the special geology and biotope (flora and fauna) of the three slag heaps, in the company of our nature guide, and walk to the top of slag heap no. 3, which is almost 250 metres high.

Art, sciences and technology at the Musée du Verre
13:30, 15:00 and 16:30: Guided tours of this museum, which completes the coal-iron-glass trilogy at the Bois du Cazier site. Visitors will be taken on an original trip back in time: beginning with the present day, they will be taken back to the origin of this noble material.

'Manoppello pour ne pas oublier' exhibition
The 'Marcinelle per non dimenticare' association will present 40 original copies of Belgian and Italian newspapers and periodicals from the time of the disaster, kept by the families of the 22 victims from this village in Abruzzo. The official inauguration will take place at 16:00.
